Invitation Memo
From: Dr. Patricia Worthington, Mr. Frank Russo
Date: April 15, 2009
Subject: 2009 Department of Energy Integrated Safety Management Workshop
Please plan to attend the 2009 Department of Energy (DOE) Integrated Safety Management (ISM) Workshop on August 24-27,2009, at the Knoxville Convention Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Workshop is sponsored by the DOE Oak Ridge Office and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Y-12 Site Office. Corporate sponsors include B&W Y-12, Bechtel Jacobs Company (BJC), EnergX, Isotek Systems, Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), UT/Battelle - Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Wackenhut Services, Inc. (WSI).
The Workshop theme, Reaching New Heights, appropriately encompasses our efforts to take the ISM system to the next level-strengthening our safety culture through leadership, worker engagement, and organizational learning. The sponsors of this year's event are committed to minimizing the environmental impact of the Workshop and are taking positive action with an "It's Easy Being Green!" initiative.
We are aggressively working with the senior leadership in DOE and NNSA up through Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, to arrange their participation to set the expectations for the Workshop and to bring their personal messages to the Workshop participants. Please stay tuned for the final lineup!
As noted in the Agenda section on the Workshop Web site, several committee meetings, seminars, and training sessions are being offered on August 24-25 to include a meeting of the DOE ISM Champions. Five different tour venues on the Oak Ridge Reservation are available for your selection. The conference's keynote speaker is Pat Summitt, head basketball coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers, and featured speaker is Gen. Fred Roggero, U.S. Air Force Chief of Safety.
All Workshop participants are encouraged to share ISM best practices and lessons learned by making a presentation at the Workshop. A list of topical areas is listed under the Track Session section of the Workshop web site, along with detailed instructions on abstract and presentation outline submission. The deadline for submission is May 29, 2009. After review by Track Leads, the selected presenters will be notified by July 1, 2009, and will be invited to a dinner to be held with the DOE ISM Champions at the Workshop on August 25, 2009.
Workshop registration is open and can be handled on the Workshop web site at http://ism.y12.doe.gov. In addition to Workshop registration, detailed information on the Workshop, hotel accommodations, and ground transportation is provided. A registration fee of $100 provides for participation in all Workshop events, food, and beverage (including a continental breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon breaks, and a reception). The registration period is from April 1 through July 24, 2009. The Knoxville Airport is 14 miles from the Knoxville Convention Center with shuttle service available on the Workshop web site and free downtown trolley service.
All DOE ISM Champions and paper presenters are requested to participate in the entire workshop. DOE and contractor employees are encouraged to attend and participate within current resource restraints. You are encouraged to frequently visit the conference website for up-to-date information. If you have questions concerning the workshop, please contact Dr. Patricia Worthington at 301.903.5926 or Mr. Frank Russo at 202.586.6883.
Thanks for your support of the 2009 DOE ISM Conference and for helping us reach new heights.
